LED Wall Pixel Calculator: planning guide

What this calculator measures

The native pixel canvas of an LED wall is based on physical width, height, and pixel pitch. Divide each dimension in millimetres by the pixel pitch in millimetres to estimate the count of pixels in that direction. A wall measuring 4 metres by 2.25 metres using 2.5 mm pitch has about 1,600 by 900 pixels. The displayed values are estimates because actual walls are made from discrete cabinets and modules.

How to use it on a show

Enter the intended wall width and height and the proposed pixel pitch. Compare the calculated width and height in pixels with your playback server, graphics output, and processor canvas limits. If the wall is not a standard 16:9 canvas, build show content for its native pixel matrix and decide deliberately how to place 16:9 sources inside it.

Checks before committing equipment

Ask the LED provider for actual cabinet counts, module resolution, receiving-card wiring, and supported processor output. A nominal physical dimension may not divide evenly into the chosen cabinet size. Keep content inside a safe area if tile edges are hidden by scenic work. Viewing distance, LED brightness, and photographic moiré should be checked independently; pitch alone cannot guarantee legibility.

Common questions

Is estimated resolution the exact wall resolution

No. The precise result comes from cabinet/module pixel counts.

Should I deliver graphics at 1920 × 1080 anyway

Only when the playback or processor intentionally scales that source to the native wall; a native-size canvas avoids unnecessary scaling.
