Resolution / Scaling Calculator: planning guide

Fit versus fill

A video scaler can preserve the complete image within the destination, or fill the destination and crop any excess. Fit chooses the smaller horizontal or vertical scale factor, leaving letterbox or pillarbox space if ratios differ. Fill chooses the larger factor; the image covers the target but some content extends beyond the frame.

Worked workflow

For 1920 × 1080 content feeding a 1920 × 1200 canvas, Fit retains the entire 1920 × 1080 picture and produces 60-pixel bars above and below. Fill scales by 1200/1080, creating approximately 2133 × 1200 pixels and cropping about 107 pixels from each side. These are mathematical image sizes, not encoder timing specifications.

Practical image-quality checks

A non-integer scaling factor often requires resampling. Fine type, one-pixel lines and test grids can become soft. To make content pixel-perfect, target the native screen pixels and avoid multiple scaling stages. Consider EDID, GPU output format, aspect-ratio metadata, and where any crop is physically applied in the signal chain.

Common questions

Does Fit always add black bars

Only when source and destination aspect ratios differ.

Are crops rounded to whole pixels

Hardware processing may round values and reposition the sampling area. Treat fractional results as geometry, then validate on equipment.
