Screen Size / Viewing Distance Reference: planning guide

From diagonal to true image dimensions

A 120-inch diagonal does not mean a screen is 120 inches wide. The physical image width and height depend on the display aspect ratio. For a 16:9 picture, diagonal size converts to width and height using the Pythagorean relationship. Accurate dimensions are needed when planning audience sightlines and content readability.

Angular size and distance in heights

Horizontal viewing angle approximates the amount of the field of view occupied by the display. Viewing distance expressed in image heights (H) provides another geometry reference. A lower H number means the audience is closer relative to the picture height. Neither number alone decides whether fine spreadsheet text can be read comfortably.

How to plan real audiences

Measure the farthest relevant seat, smallest critical text, screen mounting elevation, and possible obstructions. Evaluate content type, display brightness, room lighting, and people standing. For a standards-based task analysis, consult the current applicable AVIXA guidance or qualified designer rather than treating this simple geometric reference as an automatic standards pass.

Common questions

Why is viewing angle different for different aspect ratios

The same diagonal gives different image widths.

Can I use this to prove every seat can read a slide

No; letter height, acuity, contrast, glare and visual obstructions must also be evaluated.
